PROVENANCE:
Étienne Guyot (1766 - 1807), French general during the Revolution and the Empire.
At Eylau, at the head of the 1st regiment of chasseurs de la Garde, Guyot charged a mass of Russian infantry and crossed two enemy lines. After this affair, he joined the 2nd regiment of the Garde, whose colonel had been killed, and retained command of it until the peace of Tilsit. Eugène de Beauharnais and Guyot were both commanding officers of the Régiment des chasseurs à cheval de la Garde. Eugène was always very kind to Guyot, and was godfather to his son Eugène Guyot, a prefect under the Second Empire.
This engraving was a gift from Eugène de Beauharnais to Guyot in 1812, a rare and historical souvenir.
