The author is given at the end of the preface. ‘This essay was compiled exclusively from materials preserved in the archive of the Smolensk Deputies’ Assembly.’ PROVENANCE: Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Altertumskunde der Ostseeprovinzen Russlands [Society for the History and Antiquities of the Baltic Provinces of Russia] — a scholarly society active from 1834 to 1939, first in the Russian Empire and later in the Republic of Latvia, headquartered in Riga.
