Félix-Henri Giacomotti (1828-1909), of Italian origin, became a naturalised French citizen in 1849 and studied at the Besançon School of Drawing. In 1854 he won the Prix de Rome for historical painting for Abraham Washing the Angels’ Feet, and went to Rome to study at the Villa Medici. On his return, he exhibited at the Salon from 1859 to 1909. He received numerous commissions, including a ceiling for the Musée du Luxembourg, La Gloire de Rubens, now in Bourges town hall. He was appointed director of the municipal school of fine arts and curator of the Besançon museum until his death. Giacomotti had a penchant for religious and history painting, such as this scene after the Battle of Magenta, fought on 4 June 1859 during the Italian Campaign, which ended in a Franco-Sardinian victory led by Napoleon III against the Austrians of Marshal Ferencz Gyulai.
