signed and dated 'D.O.Widhopff 30' (lower right) oil on canvas 73 x 90 Framed: 76.5 x 94 cm David Osipovich Widhopff was a Ukrainian and French painter, caricaturist, and poster artist. Born in 1867 in Odessa, Widhopff gained his diploma at the Royal Academy in Odessa before furthering his studies in Munich under Max Herterich. In 1887, he moved to Paris to attend the Académie Julian, where he studied under Tony Robert-Fleury and Jules Joseph Lefebvre, his colleagues included Maurice Denis and Paul Ranson. Widhopff exhibited at the Paris Salons in 1888, 1891, and 1893. He later traveled to Brazil, establishing a fine arts school in Pará before returning to Paris, where he became friends with Alfons Mucha and Léon Deschamps. He also met Hugues Delorme and Jules Roques at Le Courrier français and his collaborations included work with Willette.
