Anton Vladimirovich Kartashev (1875–1960) – theologian, church historian, and religious and public figure. A close friend of Zinaida Gippius and Dmitry Merezhkovsky, he was an active member of their religious community. Chairman of the Religious-Philosophical Society in St. Petersburg (1909–1917), contributor to the journal New Path under the pseudonym T. Romansky, and editor-publisher of the newspaper Herald of Life.

Jesus the Unknown, widely considered the most important work Merezhkovsky wrote in exile, concludes his trilogy on humanity’s paths to salvation, The Mystery of the Three. The first volume was published in Prague in 1925 as The Mystery of the Three: Egypt and Babylon, while the second appeared in Berlin in 1930 under the title The Mystery of the West: Atlantis-Europe.
