In a composite period binding. Leather banded spine with gold embossing, covers covered with calico. In good condition. Scuffing on the binding, loss of a fragment of leather on the spine, ownership inscription on a blank endpaper. A work by Russian writer, ethnographer, memoirist, traveler, and honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1900), Sergey Vasilyevich Maksimov (1831-1901), containing explanations of various words and expressions from colloquial Russian speech, whose original meanings have been lost to most people. The folklorist’s works were frequently published both during his lifetime and after, and continue to be reprinted in large editions today.
