Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1849-1936) was an outstanding physiologist, the founder of the science of higher nervous activity. In 1904, he became the first Russian scientist to be awarded the Nobel Prize. The award was given to Pavlov for his many years of research on the mechanisms of digestion, which led to a fundamental transformation in this area of physiology. The results of Pavlov's scientific work, spanning a decade, along with his collaborators at the Institute of Experimental Medicine and at the Military Medical Academy, were first compiled into a single book and published in 1897
