An icon in a brass oklad ‘Fyodorovskaya Virgin’ Central Russia, late 19th century

Wood, gesso, tempera 31,2 x 25,6 cm Condition: no restoration, covered with a layer of darkened varnish. The ‘restrained’ image of the Virgin is intensified by the exquisite oklad decorated with the elegant embossed ‘buckwheat’ ornamentation. It enhances the sense of «antiquity» so carefully maintained in iconography.
