He was taught by his father, a self-taught artist F. L. Swebach (Fontaine), then by M. Duplessis in Paris. He made his debut in 1783 at the Salon Correspondance. In 1791-1822 he was exhibited in the Salon of the Louvre. In 1802-1813, he was an artist of the Sevres porcelain Manufactory. In 1815, he came to Russia as the chief artist of the Imperial Porcelain Factory at the invitation of Count D. A. Guryev. In 1820, he returned to his homeland, having got the Order of St. Anna. He was very popular among the Russian aristocracy. Father of the artist B. E. Swebach.
