ГЛИНКА, Сергей Николаевич. The Russian history. 1823

Volume one (of 5). Publication: Univ. tip., Moskva, 1823. A very good copy of the rst volume of the third revised edition of this monumental work on the Russian history, which was rst published in 1818. Though this copy comprises only two rst parts out of the total fourteen, they are complete in itself giving a deep insight into the origins of the Russian state and its early history. The two parts cover the period from 862 when Riurik began to reign in Novgorod up until 1224, when the Russian state, weakened by disputes for power between numerous princelings, was conquered by Mongols. Glinka (1776 - 1847) was a prominent Russian historian and writer. In this work he was trying to prove that Russian state was established by people who originally lived on the Russian territories. This point contradicted with the view supported by many foreign and Russian historians who claimed that Russian state was founded by immigrants from the Swedish territories. Description and Bibliographical references: Octavo (21.5 x 13.5 cm). Two parts in one volume. 228, 228 pp., with 14 engraved portraits; marginal waterstains on title, occasional light spotting. Contemporary calf over marbled boards, spine gilt-ruled with gilt lettering, green bookmark; rubbed. Provenance: Vladimir Bakhmetev, 26 September 1847 (inscription in ink on upper pastedown).
