Lead October 2020 sales in Monte Carlo
On October 27 and 28, Hermitage Fine Art held its autumn sales in the elegant rooms of the Hermitage Hotel in Monaco, where bidders from Russia, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East placed their bids for all the presented categories, raising their paddles in the room, by telephone and in the worldwide online platforms.

As expected, the stars of the auctions were the Russian 19-20 century paintings by the masters: top stars of the painting section being Aivazovsky’s The Turkish Coast at Sunset which fetched 278,000€, Korovin’s Paris at Night (75,500€) and Fedot Sychkov’s Girl with a blue scarf, sold for 22,500€.

Russian Rare Books proved popular among collectors, who did not miss a special selection of an early XX century illustrated anniversary editions of masterpieces of Russian typographic art: Coronations of Alexander III (17,200€) and Nicholas II (14,800€). Worth of note are also The Collection of biographies of cavalry guards (18,900€), The chronicle and face collection of the house of Romanov (4,600€) and Tsarskoe Selo during the reign of the empress Elisabeth Petrovna by Alexandre Benois (6,500€).
THE CORONATION OF NICHOLAS II (1894-1917)
Highlights of the Russian icons collection were a majestic Saint Peter, metropolitan of Kiev and all Russia, late XIX century, and Our Lady Hodegetria, early XVIII century, which made 5,000€ and 1,700€ respectively.
Furthermore, two particularly rare porcelain plates belonging to the Soviet Propaganda collection were sold for 53,000€ and 72,000€.
LÉOPOLD SURVAGE (1879-1968) La ville, feuilles et main
The Fine Art collection comprised, among others, works of surrealist Léopold Survage and post-impressionist Henri Le Sidaner. Survage’s La ville, feuilles et main fetched 14,500€ and Le Sidaner’s La rue au clair de lune, dedicated to our neighboring fishing village of Villefranche Sur Mer, made 13,600€.
The American Dream collection saw the sale of two paintings by some of the most relevant imagist of the Golden Age of American Illustration. Judaic art also scored, with a Ben Avram that fetched 1,800€.
ALESSANDRO BARBARO, MURANO MASTER GLASSMAKER, XX CENTURY Chariot
A superb Murano glass sculpture by Venetian master glassmaker Alessandro Barbaro was sold for 3,300€ at the Decorative Objects auction on October 28, accompanied by some fine lots like a Cartier silver letter opener or an antique set of Chinese pierced carved white jades.

For the Photographs section, Jane Birkin’s large format pose 8 by photographer Jean Pierre Fizet gained 10,500€ and two photographs by Alexander Rodchenko were sold for a total price of 3,500€. Worth mentioning is the rare View of Monaco, our hometown, by L. Anfossi et Giotti, which kept the sale’s excitement until the end fetching 6,800€.
