Serge (Sergei Mikhailovich) Lifar (1905-1986) – ballet artist, choreographer, dance theorist, collector, and bibliophile of Ukrainian origin. Emigrating in 1923, he danced with Diaghilev's "Russian Seasons" until 1929 and, after Diaghilev's death, became the premier danseur of the Paris Opera. From 1930-1945 and 1947-1958, he directed the ballet company of the theater. A significant figure in French choreography, Lifar also gave lectures on the history and theory of ballet. He founded the Paris University of Choreography and the University of Dance.
