A LOUIS XVI ORMOLU AND PATINATED-BRONZE MANTEL-CLOCK SIGNED BY FERDINAND BERTHOUD, 18TH CENTURY
the dial signed ‘F. Berthoud Paris, movement numerated ‘20976’ ormoulu bronze, white marble 47 x 18 x 36 cm Ferdinand Berthoud (1727 – 1807), born in in the Principality of Neuchâtel, moved to Paris in 1745 and became master watchmaker in Paris in 1753. He quickly gained a reputation for the quality of his naval clocks and chronometers, and he was appointed Clockmaker and Mechanic to the King of France and the Navy in 1773.
