In 1793-1794 the well-known polymath, naturalist and traveler Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811) made a journey to the southern provinces of Russia - from St. Petersburg to the Volga region, Astrakhan, the Caspian coastal plain, the North Caucasus, the Crimea and Ukraine. The expedition involved Christian Geisler (1770-1844), an artist, engraver, and illustrator from Leipzig, who sketched southern types and locales for an atlas.
