In order to ‘calculate the benefits brought by the Demidovs to the Fatherland’ not only through the development of iron and copper plants, the author collected materials about their scientific and charitable activities.
One of sections is devoted to personal life of the manufacturer, circumstances of his heritage devision between his three sons after his death and activities of his descendants, mostly his younger son Nikita and his family line.
Provenance:
the Library of San-Donato is associated with the names of three representatives of the Demidov family, each of whom left his traces on the books of the library. Its core was the library of Pavel Nikolayevich Demidov (1798-1841). After his death, the books were inherited first by his brother Anatoly Nikolaevich (1812-1870), who took them to the Italian estate of San-Donato; and then by the direct heir, son-Pavel Pavlovich (1839-1885), who obtained an official right to bear the title of Prince of San-Donato in Russia. It seems that oval stamp with the wording ‘Bibliotheque de San Donato’ appeared on the books just that time.
