Signed ‘C. Venard’ (lower right) Oil on canvas 38.0 x 46.0 cm Provenance: Private collection, France A famous abstract painter of the 20th Century, Claude Venard opened up perspectives by projecting space and color into every part of the canvas, in accordance with an emotional rather than a physical interest regarding his compo- sition. Instead of capturing the outward appea- rances of his subjects and still-lives, he focused on their inner forces and meaning by underli- ning rhythms through shapes, colors, contrasts and viewpoints. As the poet André Salomon (1881-1944) said about his oeuvres: “They are not meant for empty souls or tepid hearts.”
