Salvador Dalí and the Unrealised Ballet Mysteria
Autograph letters and original drawings addressed to Léonide Massine, Del Monte, California, circa 1941–1942
Monaco — 29 October
Lot 784 · Rare Books & Manuscripts Auction · 29 October
An exceptional group of manuscript materials by Salvador Dalí, addressed to the choreographer Léonide Massine, comprising original drawings, stage designs and detailed choreographic instructions for the ballet Mysteria. The documents offer a rare insight into the artist’s creative process and his direct involvement in developing a theatrical production combining Surrealist imagery, religious symbolism and experimental choreography. The project, however, was never realised in its intended form due to a dispute between Massine and the management of the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo, which led to the choreographer’s departure from the company.
The group will be offered as lot 784, estimated at €40,000 – €45,000, at our Rare Books & Manuscripts auction on 29 October at the Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo.
The Ballet
Following his collaboration with Massine on Bacchanale (1939, music by Wagner) and Labyrinth (1941, music by Schubert), both staged at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, Dalí conceived a new ballet. Initially entitled Sacrifice, then El Sueño de Felipe II after El Greco’s celebrated painting, it finally became Mysteria.
The letters set out the choreography scene by scene: a minuet in which twelve girls each perform individual gestures, ‘one dramatic, another gentle, another languishing, another stiffened by catalepsy’; the Dance of the Innocent and his wife, with an umbrella transformed into a theatre-tent and a puppet play of the struggle between an Angel and a Demon; the woman turned into a ‘monstrous demon’; and, at the very end, the curtain of the ‘celestial apotheosis’.

In Dalí’s Words
«Le rideau est de beaucoup le plus beau et paralysant de ce que j’ai fait jusqu’aujourd’hui : c’est dans l’esprit et la categorie de la transfiguration de Rafaël !»
The curtain is by far the most beautiful and overwhelming thing I have created to date: it is in the spirit and category of Raphael’s Transfiguration!
«Je suis ému de la beauté de ce que nous allons faire et je pense que vous etes des rares personne avec qui je peux m’entendre, car nous vivons un climat lyrique semblable»
I am moved by the beauty of what we are going to create, and I believe that you are one of the few people with whom I can truly understand one another, because we share a similar lyrical sensibility.
