Trotsky effectively led the Red Army from 14 March 1918, first as People’s Commissar for Military Affairs and then also for Naval Affairs. Until 1925 Bolshevik propaganda regarded Lev Trotsky as ‘one of the leaders of the Red Army’, while his opponents treated him as the ‘military leader’ of Bolshevism.
