Wunderkind was founded in Potsdam in 2003 by the German designer Wolfgang Joop (b. 1944) and his partner Edwin Lemberg. Joop, who had made his name with the JOOP! label, which he left in 2001, first achieved international success in 1978 with a fur collection. With Wunderkind he sought a more personal, artistic approach to luxury ready-to-wear, combining couture craftsmanship with bold, sculptural cuts. The label showed in New York from 2004 and at Paris Fashion Week from 2006, and is known for its precise tailoring and dramatic silhouettes, as illustrated by the pointed overlapping panels of this coat.
