signed and titled in Cyrillic ‘V. Kapterev’ (on the reverse), inscribed, titled Kirgiz and dated ‘29/IX/34’ on the old Vsekokhudozhnik label affixed to the reverse gouache on paper Executed in 1934. Valery Kapterev studied at VKhUTEMAS under Aleksandr Shevchenko, graduating in 1925, and later at the State Institute of Cinematography. He was a member of several influential Moscow artists’ associations, including Bytie and the Society of Moscow Artists (OMKh). He travelled extensively through Central Asia during the 1920s and 1930s, producing a significant body of works inspired by Kazakhstan, the Pamirs and Tajikistan. Much of his pre-war work was lost or destroyed during and after the Second World War, making surviving works from this formative period particularly rare.
