After studying in Odessa and at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, he moved to Paris in 1910, where he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. From 1912, he worked at La Ruche alongside Marc Chagall, Ossip Zadkine, Alexander Archipenko, and Chaïm Soutine. He also established close friendships with Hans Arp, Robert Delaunay, and Sonia Delaunay. Influenced by Cubism, Futurism and Orphism, he produced innovative sculptures that Guillaume Apollinaire recognised as being highly original. During the First World War, he lived in Norway, where he held his first solo exhibition. Returning to Russia in 1917, he exhibited alongside other leading figures of the Soviet avant-garde and developed the Optophonic Piano, an instrument combining colour and light inspired by Alexander Scriabin's synesthetic theories. He presented a series of optophonic concerts in Moscow. In 1925, he settled permanently in Paris, where he continued to paint, sculpt and exhibit at the Paris Salons. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 and deported to Auschwitz, where he died in 1944. His works are included in the collections of major museums, such as the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
