signed ‘B Laguna’ (lower left) oil on canvas 60 x 58 cm Executed in the early 20th century, the present work depicts the Haarlemmer Houttuinen, one of Amsterdam’s oldest waterfront districts. Much of the neighbourhood was demolished during the urban redevelopment of the 1960s and 1970s. This painting preserves a view of a vanished Amsterdam. Born into Amsterdam’s Portuguese-Jewish community, Baruch Lopes Leão de Laguna studied at the Rijksakademie under August Allebé and became associated with the Laren School. Although best known for his portraits and flower still lifes, he also Painted views of Amsterdam. He and his wife were deported to Auschwitz, where they perished in 1943 and 1944 respectively.
