Leonid Ivanovich Chernov was a Ukrainian Soviet painter, graphic artist and educator. A graduate of the Kharkiv Art Institute, he studied under Mykola Samokysh, Oleksii Kokel and Mykhailo Kozyk. Renowned for his landscapes, still lifes and genre scenes, he taught at the Kharkiv Art Institute from 1947, becoming professor in 1977, and trained a generation of Ukrainian artists. A People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, he exhibited extensively in the Soviet Union and abroad. A study trip to India in 1957 had a lasting influence on his artistic vision.
