[2], 264 pp.; 25.5 x 20 cm. Pagination errors. In a late 20th-century half-leather binding imitating a period binding. In good condition. The text block slightly trimmed, minor soiling. Owner’s inscription on the title page: ‘From the books of Arsenius, Archbishop of Rostov and Yaroslavl.’ ‘Epic Works’ was published only once — by Novikov in 1786–1787. The reference to a second edi-tion on the title page does not apply to the collection as a whole, but to the individual works con-tained therein. A lifetime edition by Mikhail Matveyevich Kheraskov (1733–1807), writer and statesman, a leading figure of Russian Classicism. Bibliography: SK XVIII. No. 8037. Provenance: Archbishop Arsenius (born V.I. Vereshchagin; 1736–1799) — a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Yaroslavl and Rostov. He possessed a personal library of several thousand volumes, published mainly in foreign languages in Europe and Russia. Today, the majority of it is held in the Yaroslavl and Rostov Museum-Reserves. Thanks to Vereshchagin, his close acquaint-ance A. I. Musin-Pushkin became the owner of the manuscript of ‘The Tale of Igor’s Campaign’.
