Ted Saucier was a Canadian American publicist in charge of public relations at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.
His cocktail guide ″Bottoms Up″ remains a seminal work of the mid-20th century, both for cocktail recipes and for pin-up art.
Beyond its 780 recipes, all the many facets of drinking, preparing drinks and serving them are covered in detail in the book. In addition to the recipes, Bottoms Up contains tips on mixing drinks; a glossary of bar terms; a table of the standard sizes of glasses; photographs of the correct glassware for cocktails, wines and spirits, and a list of the national toasts of 38 countries. The volume also includes a chapter on the correct service of wines with food, as well as a detailed chart of wine vintage years by Claude C. Philippe, Host of The Waldorf-Astoria.
The book’s handsome waterproof, lithographed binding in full color was designed by Al Dorne, former president of the Society of Illustrators. In addition to marginal decorations in color by Russell Patterson, there are full-page illustrations in full color by such distinguished artists as Arthur William Brown, Gilbert Bundy, Robert Bushnell, Earl Cordrey, Bradshaw Crandell, Phil Dormont, Mr. All Dorne, John Falter, James Montgomery Flagg, John La Gatta, Mr. Russell Patterson and Ben Stahl.
