Jack Grohusko, born in England a Russian Jewish family, arrived in the United States at a very young age. He lived in Hoboken, New Jersey, and worked in several New York City bars before enjoying a decade of success at Baracca’s, a popular Italian restaurant in downtown New York City, where he developed a reputation as a mixologist. There he published the first edition of his Jack’s Manual. The book notably features the Brooklyn Cocktail, likely his creation. Grohusko then opened his own bar in 1910 and revised his manual several times throughout his career.
