The book is based on the idea that, although pre-Mongol Rus’ maintained close contacts with both East and West, Eastern influences proved deeper and ultimately more beneficial in shaping Russian culture and national consciousness.
Georgiy Vernadskiy (1888–1973) was a prominent Russian-American historian, professor at Yale University, son of the great thinker Vladimir Vernadskiy and a student of Vasiliy Klyuchevskiy.
