Born in Poland, Garfinkiel was associated with the École de Paris. Trained in Warsaw and Krakow, he settled in Paris in 1932. Initially influenced by Cubism, he developed an expressive figurative style, often exploring Jewish themes. Also a photographer, he worked for Studio Harcourt and later ran his own studio in Belleville. His work gained recognition after World War II, notably with Exodus, acquired by the City of Paris in 1959.
