Annenkov 1921’ lithograph on paper 34.5 × 22.3 cm Pavel Eliseevich Shchegolev (1877–1931) was a Russian historian and literary scholar specialising in the history of Russian literature and the social movements of the nineteenth century. He is particularly known for his research on the life and work of Alexander Pushkin. His scholarly interests were remarkably broad, ranging from the history of Ancient Rus and medieval universities to the revolutionary movements of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as regional studies and major historical-literary monographs. Over the course of his career he published more than 600 works. Among other projects, he collaborated with Aleksey N. Tolstoy on the literary mystification The Diary of Vyrubova, which was published in the journal Minuvshie dni (Days Gone By).
