illegibly signed (lower left) oil on canvas 30.4 x 52.5 cm The term ‘yacht club’ derives from the Russian jacht-klub (яхт-клуб). Founded in 1861, Nylandska Jaktklubben (NJK) is Finland’s oldest registered sailing club. Its statutes, approved by Tsar Alexander II, were inaugurated by Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich Romanov. The original flag, confirmed in 1861, echoed that of the Imperial Yacht Club Neva, bearing the Nyland provincial arms on a blue cross over white. The current flag, adopted in 1919, is the fourth version.
