signed ‘A Yvon’ (lower right) pencil on paper 10.1 × 8.1 cm (35.9 × 48 cm) executed circa 1850s Frédéric Adolphe Yvon (1817–1893) was a French painter and one of the most renowned battle artists of the Second Empire. Between 1843 and 1845, he travelled through Russia, and in 1850 painted The Battle of Kulikovo for the Grand Kremlin Palace. During the Crimean War (1853–1856), Yvon accompanied the French army, later producing several monumental canvases depicting the campaign. He was appointed Honorary Member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1859) and made an Officer of the Légion d’Honneur (1867).
