La Guilde internationale de la gravure in Geneva (Pierre Cailler and Nesto Jacometti) commissioned in 1949 from Wiiralt 5 animal compositions. The „Okapis“ was the first one made in painterly aquatint on the basis of numerous drawings, sketched from an only okapi in the Zoo of Vincennes. He liked animals very much and took the genre seriously. He made 4 prooves before the tirage (200).
