ICON ‘ASSEMBLY OF ALL SAINTS, INCLUDING CHRISTOPHE KINOKEPHALOS (DOGHEAD), IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ICON MOTHER OF GOD KAZANSKAYA WITH A SCENE OF THE DESCENT INTO HELL, THE DEESIS AND THE HEAVENLY POWERS’ Russian North, first half of the 18th century
Lot 204
1 0001 500
wood, gesso, silver leaf, tempera, coloured lacquers
31 x 26.5 cm
Condition: overall good condition, wear on the paint layer, chips on the edges of the icon; the margins were probably decorated with basma at a later date, as the paint layer is missing
The icon is distinguished by its technique: the faces are painted densely, and the figures and all the ‘details’ are outlined in black and highlighted with coloured lacquer on silver leaf. The result is an icon with very sober yet expressive colours, with characteristic calligraphic decoration and the graphic style of book miniatures.
