Born in 1921 in Lebedyn, Sumy Region, Leonid Mikhailovich Stil studied at the Kharkiv Art Institute (1945–1947) and graduated from the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1953, where he was taught by S. Besedin, I. Daits, O. Kokel, V. Meshkov, and R. Frenz.
A master of historical and thematic painting, he also worked in easel painting and book graphics, and was associated with alternative trends in Ukrainian art of the 1960s. A regular participant in republican (since 1954), all-Union (since 1953), and solo exhibitions (since 1960), he was a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine and founding director of the Balashikha Art Gallery (1976–1986).
