Private collection, Europe Ukrainian-French Modernist Painter and Stage Designer Born in Odesa, Ukraine, Mykhailo Andriienko-Nechytailo studied under Roerich, Rylov, and Bilibin at the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in Saint Petersburg (1912–1917). By 1914, he was exhibiting pioneering Cubist compositions, including Black Dome, and participating in the Leipzig International Graphics Exhibition. From 1917 to 1924, he designed stage sets across Europe, and settling in Paris in 1923, where he also worked on the films Casanova and Sheherazade. His work evolved from Cubist-Constructivism to Surrealism, Neorealism, and finally Abstraction, focusing of compositional precision and chromatic harmony. His works are held in major collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the City Museum of Modern Art, Paris.
