BULGAKOV MIKHAIL (1891-1940) The Master and Margarita: a novel. – [3rd ed.]. [Frankfurt am Main]: Posev, [1969].

Lot 747
Sold
– 498, [2] pp.; 21x14.5 cm. In the publisher's red cloth binding (buckram), with the publisher's artistic dust jacket by artist Radim Malat. Very good condition, minor soiling and small tears along the edges of the dust jacket. The novel was first published in the USSR in the magazine Moscow in 1966-1967 (Nos. 11 and 1, respectively) with numerous censorship and editorial cuts. In 1967, YMCA-Press in Paris published the first uncensored edition of the novel, and in 1969, the novel was published in Frankfurt am Main in an unprecedented way: the cuts made during its publication in the magazine Moscow were typeset in italics. It is noteworthy that almost the entire edition of the book was printed in a small format on thin paper, with a leatherette binding, and only a small part was printed in the usual size, with a hardcover and dust jacket, on good quality paper.
