Part 1. – 171, [3] pp., 13 ill.; Part 2. – 218, [2], XXIX, [1] pp.; 12 ill.; 44.5 x 35.5 cm. The illustrations are steel engravings after drawings by Engelbert Seiberts (1813–1905), court artist to King Maximilian II of Bavaria, and include numerous thematic illustrations in the text, frontispieces and endpapers. The engravings were cut and printed by A. Schleich (1812-1894) and M. Storz (b. 1816). The typeface was specially cast at the O.I. Leman Foundry in St. Petersburg. In a publisher's composite binding. Leather spine, covers – calico, gold and embossed stamping on the upper cover and spine, composite endpapers made of ornamented paper. Very good condition. Rubbing on the spine and edges of the covers, minor soiling, foxing. This gift edition of Goethe's tragedy was first published by A.F. Marx in 1889. The luxurious illustrated edition was dedicated to Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, wife of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, son of Alexander II.
