In a contemporary half-leather binding. Wear on the binding, loss of fragments of leather on the spine, foxing, moisture marks. Stamped bookplate ‘From the reading room of the Russian Bookshop’ on Nevsky Prospekt. Stamp ex-libris ‘Iz bib-ki dlya chteniya pri Russkom knizhnom magazine’ [‘From the reading library of the Russian Bookshop’] on Nevsky Prospect. A concise encyclopaedia of the everyday life and morals of the Russian people in the pre-Petrine era. Work on the ‘Essay’ began and was largely completed in Saratov, where the thirty-year-old adjunct professor of Russian history at Kiev University had been exiled for his involvement in the Cyril and Methodius Society. In 1862, the ‘Essay’ received an honourable mention from the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Rare.
