Dr. Arpad Plesch (1889-1974)
Businessman, bibliophile, collector, famous for his collection of botanical works (one of the largest in the world) and curiosities. It was sold at auction in London in 1975. He also compiled a catalogue raisonné and annotated catalogue of 3,500 species and varieties of tropical plants acclimatised at the ‘La Léonina’ Experimental Station in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, entitled ‘Essais d'acclimatation de plantes tropicales en France’ (Essays on the acclimatisation of tropical plants in France). La Léonina was the Plesch couple's villa, where they had a large botanical garden built.
