Raïssa Maritain (born Oumansoff) (1883-1960) was a poet, religious figure, and close friend of Marc Chagall. She was the wife of philosopher and thinker Jacques Maritain. Born in Rostov-on-Don into a Jewish family, she emigrated with her parents to France. She lived in Paris and graduated from the Sorbonne's Faculty of Science in 1904. In 1906, she converted to Catholicism. In 1922, together with her husband, she organised the Centre for Creative Intellectuals of the Catholic Revival in her home in Medon (near Paris). The couple became close friends with Jean Bourguin, who was in a relationship with Jean Cocteau. Raïssa's death on 4 November 1960 had a profound effect on Jean Bourguin.
