Interesting correspondence After the death of Prince Eugène, concerning the management of his children’s estate, of which she is guardian, and various matters relating to the sale of estates in Martinique, as well as the Château de Navarre, etc. She reproaches her agent for suggesting that a commission be paid to the notary: As he was under you, I would have liked you to have settled everything in Paris concerning his accounts, travels (...). It seems that he believed he would receive 5 per cent on the sale price of Martinique, which is not customary here (...) and which I could not do without harming the interests of my children (...). The happiness of my children is the only thing that still matters to me (...). I have suffered cruel misfortunes; my happiness is in the grave; but I am a very happy mother (...). She is enjoying her time in the countryside, surrounded by a small circle of close friends. She mentions Princess Charlotte de Rohan, her daughter Eugénie, and her new husband Auguste, as well as the Christmas gifts she is preparing: I am a mother and guardian, and nothing in the world could make me stray from my duties, which I have always fulfilled with scrupulous accuracy. The Prince knew this, and that is why he placed the interests of my children in my hands (...). Insinuations, flattery and slander have no effect on me; I judge only by actions and results (...). She considers the proposals concerning the Navarre estate to be good, but she is annoyed that he has forgotten the model deeds needed to finalise the matter: You know how difficult they are in France on this point (...). Regarding Gourgaud, she is delighted that he is proving more amenable and acknowledging his mistakes. Let us hope he does not change, for he is like a chameleon (...).
