(...) Mamère had undertaken to pay you sixty thousand francs over two years. I see from your letter that you have already received thirty-six thousand (...). I have given orders that the debts left by my poor mother, and they are many, be settled as quickly as possible (...).

Eugène Rose de Beauharnais (1781-1824), member of the French Imperial family. Born from the first marriage of Marie-Joseph-Rose de Tascher de la Pagerie (known as Joséphine de Beauharnais, first wife of Emperor Napoleon I from 1796 to 1809), he was officially adopted by Napoleon in 1806.
He had a brilliant military career before being appointed viceroy of Italy. He was one of Napoleon’s most loyal and talented subordinates, who made him general-in-chief. He commanded the IV Corps during the Russian campaign. His loyalty to the Emperor earned him the respect of all. After Waterloo, he took refuge in Munich, where his father-in-law named him Duke of Leuchtenberg, and he devoted himself to his estates.
