inscribed 'London Pub. 1 Feb. 1813 Clement Inv.', 'Engraved by J. Hassels' engraving on paper 34 x 43 cm executed in 1813 The retreat of the once-great French army from Russia, marked by extreme cold, starvation, and relentless Cossack attacks. Many soldiers perished from frost or were overwhelmed during the disastrous withdrawal. In this scene, starving French soldiers and a few women huddle around a fire in a snow-covered landscape: one lies face down in exhaustion to the right, another dead near a cannon to the left, while a third crouches beside a fallen horse. In the background, a group of Cossacks gallop out of the trees to strike.
