‘As soon as the Emperor learned that you had received a letter in which the Emperor, his friend and ally, announces the birth of the King of Rome, his Majesty showed great eagerness to receive it; here is the proof, he has instructed me to write to you that he wishes you to come and present this letter to him in person, this Afternoon at 4 o’clock, and to inform your Excellency that After the audience he will keep you for lunch.’
Count Nikolai Petrovich Rumyantsev (1754-1826) was a prominent statesman of the Russian Empire, head of Russian diplomacy during the Napoleonic Wars, a major patron of the arts, founder of the Rumyantsev Museum. He resided in Paris for four months, from November 1808 to February 1809.
