Joseph Fouché, known as Fouché de Nantes, Duc d'Otranto, Comte Fouché (1759-1820) was a French politician and a complex character who has fascinated many authors. He is particularly well known for his involvement in the violent suppression of the Lyon insurrection in 1793, and for having been Minister of Police under the Directoire, the Consulate, the Empire and the Second Restoration.
