signed in Cyrillic ‘P Ksidias’ (lower right) pencil on paper 15.5 x 11.6 cm (à vue) Pericles Spiridonovich was a Russian painter, graphic artist, and printmaker of Greek origin, born in Cephalonia, Greece. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1889 to 1893 under Ivan Pozhalostin and earned silver medals in 1891 and 1893. In 1897, he was awarded the title of artist for his engraving Portrait of A. F. Kokorinov, and in 1906 he was appointed an academician. Ksidias worked at Goznak, engraving banknotes, coins, and postage stamps, including the first Russian SFSR stamp issued in 1918. His works were exhibited at the Academy of Arts’ Spring Exhibitions, and he was a member of the Arkhip Kuindzhi Society.
