Tears and losses along the edges of covers and spines, some covers detached from blocks, some blocks loose and separating into sections and pages. Richly illustrated: numerous black-and-white images, drawings, and photographs in the text; illustrations on separate sheets; 18 printed in heliogravure, and 3 smaller color illustrations mounted on thick gray paper. This monumental work contains invaluable artistic and archival material, reflecting the wealth and grandeur of Russian art. Painter, historian, and art theorist Igor Grabar (1871-1960) collaborated with leading figures of Russian culture, including A.N. Benois, I.Ya. Bilibin, A.M. Vasnetsov, N.N. Wrangel, N.K. Roerich, F.F. Gornostayev, S.P. Diaghilev, V.A. Pokrovsky, N.P. Kondakov, S.K. Makovsky, A.I. Uspensky, and others. Although unfinished, this work remains one of the most comprehensive studies of Russian art history. Volume 4 was left incomplete, with only Issue 23 released, most of which was destroyed by fire, marking the end of the publication.
