Both volumes in blank owner's full calf bindings from the mid-20th century. In good condition. Minor foxing in the text blocks, owner's inscription on the title pages 'L. Shishkov.' Presumably, the copy was given to the Russian chemist and professor Leon Nikolaevich Shishkov (1830-1908). Alexander Semenovich Shishkov (1754-1841) was a Russian writer, military and statesman, and admiral. He served as the State Secretary and Minister of Public Education. He was one of the leading ideologists of Russian patriotism during the Patriotic War of 1812. He was also the President of the Russian Academy, a philologist, and a literary critic. This edition of A.S. Shishkov's works is the most complete, including previously unpublished materials, the publication of which was delayed by the order of Nicholas I until the passing of those state and church figures with whom Shishkov had ideological disagreements, in order to avoid hurting their self-esteem and honor. It holds historical value and is considered rare. Bibliography: Knigokhranilishche S.R. Mintslova. No. 634.
