Reproduction of 93 portraits by the artist, including 60 black plates of drawings, lithographs and paintings and 33 plates of paintings in colour. First edition of this work composed entirely by Henri Matisse, who chose the works reproduced himself. The cover is a composition by the artist, executed especially for this work, as is the original lithograph printed as the frontispiece. With an introduction by Matisse. Two thousand eight hundred and fifty copies, numbered from 1 to 2,850, finished printing on 20 December 1954. The original lithograph, cover and colour plates were printed by Ateliers Mourlot Frères.
