«Dear Sir, I thank you sincerely for sending me the Monte-Carlo concert programme [Camille Erlanger was to conduct in Monte-Carlo on 13 April 1899 two «tableaux» of his «dramatic legend» Saint-Julien l’Hospitalier composed after the tale by Gustave Flaubert].
As for your request to come and play in a symphony concert in Petersburg, I would advise you to contact Mr César Cui, the director of the Musical Society, which gives these concerts. I have no connection with these concerts.
It would give me great pleasure to know that your commitment has been fulfilled and I look forward to meeting you in Petersburg. Please accept, Sir, the assurance of my most distinguished consideration. [The following is in the composer’s handwriting:] Nicolas Rimsky-Korsakow. 25 March 1899. St. Petersburg.»
